Installation
- Confirm the ceiling box at the intended fan location is a listed fan-rated box under NEC 314.27(C), or install a listed fan-rated retrofit brace box if remodeling.
- Place the fan at least 3-4 ft to the side of the range hood/cooktop centerline rather than directly above it, so the fan's downdraft does not cross the hood's capture zone.
- Mount the fan on a downrod so the blades sit at least 7 ft above the finished floor and at least 18 in from any wall or cabinet, per the fan's installation manual.
- Wire and support the fan per the box's NEC listing and the fan's UL 507 installation instructions.
- Set the range hood to run at least the airflow ASHRAE 62.2 calls for (100 CFM intermittent local exhaust or the equivalent) before testing how the two fixtures interact.
- Run the range hood and ceiling fan together on the ceiling fan's lowest speed and watch whether steam or smoke escapes the hood's capture area; lower the fan speed or turn it off while cooking if the plume drifts.
- Wipe the fan blades on a kitchen-specific cleaning schedule, since airborne grease and cooking aerosol settle on blades operating near a cooktop faster than on fans in other rooms.
